Sumario:Samples of phytoplankton were obtained from September 2004 to November 2005 in three sites of El Tamarindo estuary which belongs to Golfo de Fonseca. Superficial horizontal hauls were used. The cuantitative analysis shows a very diverse diatom community in which the Chaetoceros genus is the dominant group. This group has 17 reported species followed by Coscinodiscus with 11 species and Rhizosolenia with 9 species. All of these species represent new registers to the community, furthermore there is an increase in the number of registered species for the salvadorean estuaries
