It describes the origins of free software and its meaning. It mentions the three levels of automation within a library: catalog automation, repository generation and comprehensive automation. It points out the different free software applications for each of the levels and offers a series of advantages and disadvantages in the use of this type of products. It is concluded that the automation project is arduous but full of satisfactions, emphasizing that there is no project free of costs, because although it is true that free software is free, there are other costs related to the implementation, training and implementation of the project. El documento describe la problemática presupuestaria en las unidades de información y los altos costos del software comercial especializado en la automatización de bibliotecas. Describe los orígenes del software libre y su significado. Menciona los tres niveles de automatización dentro de una biblioteca: automatización de catálogos, generación de repositorios y automatización integral. Señala las distintas aplicaciones de software libre para cada uno de los niveles y ofrece una serie de ventajas y desventajas en la utilización de este tipo de productos. Se concluye que el proyecto de automatización es arduo pero lleno de satisfacciones, haciendo énfasis en que no existe un proyecto libre de costos, ya que si bien es cierto que el software libre es gratuito, existen otros costos relacionados con la implementación, capacitación y puesta en marcha del proyecto. Descreve as origens do software livre e seu significado. Ele menciona os três níveis de automação dentro de uma biblioteca: automação de catálogos, geração de repositórios e automação abrangente. Destaca as diferentes aplicações de software livre para cada um dos níveis e oferece uma série de vantagens e desvantagens no uso deste tipo de produtos. Conclui-se que o projeto de automação é árduo, mas cheio de satisfações, enfatizando que não há projeto livre de custos, pois embora seja verdade que o software livre é livre, há outros custos relacionados à implementação, treinamento e implementação do projeto.
