The science of environmental monitoring is suffering from two major phenomena: exponential growth in the ability to obtain large amounts of data, and the way we communicate them. Today we are looking to develop methods to unify theoretical experiments with simulations taking into consideration the tera-bites of information that are being generated as a result of the development in wireless telecommunications, and then analyze them in real time and communicate them to relevant audiences relatively short after. In this sense, one of the most interesting emerging systems applied to environmental monitoring is what are called wireless sensor networks (WSN). Here they are presented, and some of their uses, advantages and challenges are explained. La ciencia del monitoreo ambiental está sufriendo de dos fenómenos importantes: un crecimiento exponencial en la habilidad para obtener gran cantidad de datos, y la manera en que los comunicamos. Hoy se busca desarrollar métodos para unificar experimentos teóricos con simulaciones que tomen en consideración los tera-bites de información que se están generando como resultado del desarrollo en las telecomunicaciones inalámbricas, y luego analizarlos en tiempo real y comunicarlos a las audiencias pertinentes en un tiempo relativamente corto. En este sentido, uno de los sistemas emergentes más interesantes aplicado al monitoreo ambiental es lo que se llaman redes inalámbricas de monitoreo ambiental, conocidas por sus siglas en inglés como wireless sensor networks (WSN). Acá se presentan y se explican algunas de sus aplicaciones, ventajas y desafíos.
