Its first director was the Swiss scientist, doctor in Sciences, Henri Pittier, during 16 years (1888-1904). Its first location was the Liceo of Costa Rica that was founded one year earlier; doctor Pittier was professor at the same institution. He made his firsts observations of rainfall and temperature in San Jose, and he also studied the conditions of the country’s climate. El primer Servicio Meteorológico, en Costa Rica, fue fundado el 7 de abril de 1888 por don Mauro Fernández, durante el gobierno de don Bernardo Soto, formando parte del Instituto Físico Geográfico Nacional. Su primer director fue el científico suizo, doctor en ciencias, Henri Pittier, quien lo dirigió durante 16 años (1888–1904). Su primera ubicación fue el Liceo de Costa Rica, que había sido fundado el año anterior y del cual el doctor Pittier era profesor. Realizó aquí las primeras observaciones de lluvia y temperatura en San José y el estudio de las condiciones del clima del país.
