The objective of this work is to demonstrate that floods aren’t new or trigger only by nature, but are also linked to human activities that for decades has used the natural resources of the basin. Likewise, social perceptions are considered like a tool to understand the floods from the position of his inhabitants. Se aborda la problemática de las inundaciones del río Tempisque desde la perspectiva de la historia ambiental, enfatizando en el desarrollo de ella a lo largo del siglo XX y concentrando la atención en los poblados de Filadelfia, La Guinea, Ortega y Bolsón, localizados todos en las márgenes del Tempisque. Se pretende demostrar que las inundaciones no son eventos nuevos ni provocados únicamente por la naturaleza, sino que están íntimamente relacionados con actividades humanas y procesos extractivos de muy antigua data. Asimismo, se toma en cuenta las diversas percepciones sociales como una herramienta útil para entender las inundaciones desde la perspectiva particular de los pobladores.
