A. in the implementation of payments for environmental services (PES) is notable for being a scheme completely independent from the institutionalism of the Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal (Fonafifo). ESPH S. A. has a financial mechanism that comes from an item known as water rate, which represents the environmental cost to protect five watersheds located in the urban periphery of Heredia’s central region. The enterprise´s experience demonstrates that in sites with similar conditions, the PES is a tool that contributes to forest protection; however, it must be accompanied by other initiatives to offset the urban pressure exerted on the aquifer recharge areas. La implementación del pago por servicios ambientales (PSA) en la Empresa de Servicios Públicos de Heredia S. A. (ESPH S. A.) comprende un esquema totalmente independiente de la institucionalidad del Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal (Fonafifo). El mecanismo de financiamiento aplicado por esta empresa proviene de un rubro conocido como tarifa hídrica que cubre el costo ambiental para la protección de cinco microcuencas ubicadas en la periferia urbana de la región central de Heredia. La experiencia de ESPH S. A. demuestra que, en sitios con condiciones similares, el PSA es un instrumento que coadyuva a la protección del bosque; sin embargo, debe estar acompañado por otras iniciativas para contrarrestar la presión urbanística que pesa sobre las áreas de recarga acuífera.
