The collection of information was made in the field: GPS and “manual” inventories, scheduled observation, surveys and interviews. Mainly, it was concluded that since the late eighties, when tourist hatching occurred in Costa Rica, in small areas of San José downtown the establishments of interest and tourist use proliferated, but all of small dimensions (the relatively large are precedents). Consequently, the impact of tourism on the urban is not significant and is imperceptible in many ways, showing relevant only in a small area. In addition, tourism in San Jose downtown tends to decrease. Se expone los resultados de un estudio, efectuado en 2011 y en el primer semestre de 2012, sobre algunos de los aspectos más importantes del turismo en San José centro: características definitorias de los turistas en ese espacio geográfico; actividades que realizan; áreas y establecimientos que usan y características de estos; cambios más importantes en el uso del suelo en las áreas turísticas y transformaciones -o inercias- en el paisaje, la higiene, el sistema vial y de transportación, la seguridad y la calidad de los espacios públicos. El acopio de la información se hizo en el campo: inventarios con GPS y “manuales”, observación pautada, encuestas y entrevistas. Principalmente, se concluyó que desde fines de los ochenta, cuando se dio la eclosión turística en Costa Rica, en áreas reducidas de San José centro proliferaron los establecimientos de interés y uso turístico, pero todos de pequeñas dimensiones (los relativamente grandes son precedentes). En consecuencia, el impacto del turismo en el entorno de ese espacio no es significativo y es imperceptible en muchos aspectos, evidenciándose relevante solo en un pequeño sector. Por añadidura, el turismo en San José centro tiende a decrecer.
