AMBIENTALES120312019-12-05T19:33:23Z The Community that Eats the Canopy of the Premontane Wet Forest El pueblo que se come el dosel del bosque húmedo premontano Alfaro, Gerardo Bosque húmedo premontano Alter establishing that the ‘güetar’ indigen culture, settled in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, was –besides being displaced and dislocated-used by the Spanish conquerors for the domain of other peripheral peoples over which the ‘güetars’ had control, two areas of ‘güetar’ settlement survivors of extermination, Zapatón and Quitirrisí, are ecogeographically and ethnographically described. It’s argued that this culture always knew that the nutrient wealth is not in the ground but in the forest canopy, that’s why their farming was focalized in it through genetic manipulation, domestication of certain species and the development of vegetative farming practices like itinerant farming of field burning and grave, of ploughing and systems of policulture, in which the high protein and mineral content of canopy vegetation is used as it falls to the ground and decomposes after field burning. Finally, 66 botanical species used by the ‘güetars’ are accounted. Luego de establecer que la cultura indígena güetar, asen-tada en el Valle Central de Costa Rica, fue -además de desalojada y desarticulada- utilizada por los conquistado-res españoles para el dominio de otros pueblos periféricos sobre los que los güetares tenían control, se describe eco-geográfica y etnográficamente dos áreas de asentamiento güetar supervivientes del exterminio: Zapatón y Quitirrisí. Se argumenta que esa cultura siempre supo que la riqueza de nutrientes no está en el suelo sino en el dosel del bos-que, por lo que su agricultura se focalizó en éste a través de la manipulación genética, la domesticación de ciertas espe-cies y el desarrollo de prácticas agrícolas vegetativas como la agricultura itinerante de roza y tumba, la de barbecho y los sistemas de policultivo, en los que se aprovecha los altos contenidos de proteínas y minerales de la vegetación del dosel que cae al suelo y se descompone después de la roza. Finalmente, se da cuenta de 66 especies botánicas aprovechadas por los güetares.
