The development of ecotourism experienced in the country is emphasized, which being based in the policies of protection of nature, has every time a greater positive impact in the communities near to where it’s carried out; the particular experience of Térraba-Sierpe is analyzed, with its strengths and limitations. Finally, several orientations that should be integrated to the public policies are indicated, in order to maintain, improve and create new conditions so that our tourist industry be more competitive, especially those projects that encourage local development in harmony with the environment. Se pondera la influencia que sobre la economía de Costa Rica tiene el sostenido crecimiento del turismo: ingreso de divisas, generación de empleo, estímulo a la inversión en diversos sectores…; también se menciona los impactos negativos ambientales y sociales. Se pone énfasis en el desarrollo que ha experimentado en el país el ecoturismo que, apoyado en las políticas de protección de la naturaleza, tiene un impacto positivo cada vez mayor en las comunidades cercanas a donde se realiza; se analiza la experiencia particular de Térraba-Sierpe, con sus fortalezas y limitaciones. Finalmente, se señala varias orientaciones que habría que integrar a las políticas públicas a fin de mantener, mejorar y crear nuevas condiciones para que nuestra industria turística sea más competitiva, especialmente aquellos proyectos que incentivan el desarrollo local en armonía con el ambiente.
