Resulta impensable concebir una sociedad que no conozca en la teoría y en la práctica los lenguajes y las tecnologías de información y la comunicación; para lograr ese propósito es fundamental contar con software económicamente accesible. Hoy, gracias a la solidaridad planetaria, el software libre es una excelente opción, que está siendo utilizado con mucho éxito en varios países, en campos como la administración pública, la investigación y la enseñanza, entre otros. Además se menciona el proceso que ha seguido la Universidad de Costa Rica para hacer frente a este problema. This topic review approaches the subject of free software as a strategy for dealing with the demands of the software companies and the high prices of commercially available software. Conceiving a society that does not know the languages and technology of the information era in theory or in practice is now unthinkable; to achieve this today, the access to affordable software is indispensable. Recently, thanks to planetary solidarity, free software is an excellent option; successfully used in many countries and in fields such as public management, research and teaching, among others. The process that the University of Costa Rica has followed to solve this issue is also mentioned.
