Álvarez Pitaluga, Antonio intellectuals society independence liberalism modernity intelectuales sociedad independencia liberalismo modernidad With a philosophical and historical perspective, the article proposes to analyze a social facet, scarcely investigated by the historiographies of Cuba and Costa Rica, of the prominent Cuban pro-independence Antonio Maceo: his status as an organic intellectual of his time. From a historical characterization on this type of intellectual, it is analyzed how Maceo acquired such a condition, as well as the role that liberalism and its ideas had in Costa Rica at the end of the XIX century to complete it. It is also intended to demonstrate that this condition has been largely ignored despite its historical existence, for which Costa Rica provided a very favorable social context during the stay that developed the mythical Caribbean personality. Con perspectiva filosófica e histórica, el artículo analiza una faceta del independentista cubano Antonio Maceo escasamente investigada por las historiografías de Cuba y Costa Rica: su condición de intelectual orgánico de su época. A partir de una caracterización histórica sobre dicho tipo de intelectual, se valora cómo Maceo adquirió tal condición, así como el papel que tuvo el liberalismo costarricense a finales del siglo XIX para alcanzarla. Se pretende demostrar que esta condición ha sido mayormente soslayada a pesar de su existencia histórica, para la cual Costa Rica brindó un contexto social muy favorable durante la estancia que desarrolló la mítica figura caribeña.
