The aim is to systematize the views expressed by the students enrolled in MATEM, which are related to general aspects of the project, and also to know the professional areas these students select when entering to the university. The information for this study was collected through two questionnaires administered to the participating students during 2005-2009. The most relevant results are the following: the students listed benefits from MATEM such as the opportunity to practice for their Mathematics test (Ministry of Education exam), obtaining new knowledge and developing mathematical and reasoning skills. Most students would recommend others to participate in the project. Regarding the careers that students pursue, it was found a preference for higher studies in public universities at Costa Rica; these majors include mathematics courses in their curriculum (Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Medicine, among others). Este artículo resume las opiniones de los estudiantes que han matriculado el curso Precálculo, ofrecido por el proyecto MATEM. El objetivo es sistematizar las opiniones que han manifestado, relacionadas con aspectos generales del proyecto; además, conocer las áreas profesionales elegidas al ingresar a la universidad. La información para este estudio se recopiló por medio de dos cuestionarios aplicados a los estudiantes inscritos durante el periodo comprendido entre 2005-2009. Dentro de los resultados más relevantes se destaca que los estudiantes mencionan como beneficios de MATEM: la oportunidad de practicar para el examen de bachillerato en Matemática, la obtención de nuevos conocimientos matemáticos y el desarrollo de habilidades y destrezas de razonamiento. La mayoría recomendaría a otros participar en el proyecto. En relación con las carreras profesionales que siguen, se encontró preferencia por continuar con estudios superiores en las universidades estatales del país, en carreras que incluyen cursos de Matemática en sus programas de estudio, por ejemplo: Ingenierías, Economía, Estadística, Medicina, entre otras.
