In the process of systemic change in recent decades, there has been a strategic competition between the major powers, with the United States and the People’s Republic of China standing out. This competition generates tensions at the ideational level related to narratives, and in the material associated with the distribution of economic and military capabilities and the influence that derives from them.While the Central American region is, from a geopolitical point of view, an area of US influence, the process of systemic change has enabled the People’s Republic of China to acquire, progressively and increasingly, a fundamental role as a partner of these nations, which is accompanied by a foreign policy strategy and a narrative that clashes with the values and ideas dominant in the West, and is perceived as threatening by the United States and the new Trump administration.The purpose of this article is to understand the dynamics of strategic competition between the US and China, and its effects in Central America. In this context, the security dimension will be examined, taking as a reference the “Global Security Initiative” proposed by China in 2022 as a narrative against the prevailing perspective in the West, and its impact on the development of security cooperation with countries in the region. El sistema internacional contemporáneo se caracteriza por ser multipolar. En el proceso de cambio sistémico de las últimas décadas se ha dado una competición estratégica entre las principales potencias, destacándose Estados Unidos y la República Popular China. Esta competición genera tensiones en el plano ideacional referido a las narrativas, y en el material asociado a la distribución de capacidades económicas y militares y la influencia que deriva de aquellas. Si bien la región de América Central, desde un punto de vista geopolítico, es una zona de influencia estadounidense, el proceso de cambio sistémico ha habilitado a la República Popular China para adquirir, de manera progresiva y creciente, un rol fundamental como socio de estas naciones, lo cual se acompaña por una estrategia de política exterior y una narrativa que pugna con los valores e ideas dominantes en Occidente, y que es percibida como amenazante por Estados Unidos y la nueva administración Trump.El propósito de este artículo es comprender la dinámica de la competición estratégica entre Estados Unidos y China, y sus efectos en América Central. En ese marco, se examinará la dimensión de la seguridad, para lo cual se tomará como referencia la “Iniciativa Global de Seguridad” propuesta por China en 2022 como una narrativa frente a la perspectiva dominante en Occidente, y su incidencia en la concreción de dinámicas de cooperación de seguridad con los países de la región.
