The study addresses the linguistic varieties of Spanish in the Central Valle of a student sample from the National University of Costa Rica.The main objective is to analyze the linguistic behaviors of a group of Guanacaste speakers towards the linguistic varieties of Spanish within Central Valle. To accomplish this objective, a five-level Likert scale questionnaire is being proposed as the instrument to collect data on linguistic behaviors from Spanish from Central Valle. Moreover, in the same questionnaire, there have been included three open questions. This qualitative approach is being used to collect valuable information to complement the statistical data. Subsequently, the information obtained from the questionnaires is analyzed using statistical tools such as comparative charts and graphs. The objective would be to determine the linguistic behaviors of Guanacaste students from Chorotega and Omar Dengo’s National University sites. Regarding the results, the majority of the students interviewed (migrated and non-migrated) are aware of the linguistic differences between Guanacaste and Vallecentraleños speakers, linguistic prejudices still persist in the popular belief of some Costa Rican speakers; and finally, related with the linguistic variety under study, the Spanish from the Central Valley, there co-occur accommodation processes or linguistic adaptations, linguistic insecurity, linguistic change (manifested with the phenomenon of migration), attitudes of loyalty and linguistic identity reinforced with attitudes of greater awareness and acceptance of the linguistic and cultural diversity of Costa Rica. It may be concluded that in regard to the perception of the interviewed speakers, the historical division between the varieties of Spanish from Guanacaste and the Central Valley has been kept. However, the study of such linguistic varieties shows a leveling and progressive approach of both linguistic varieties, it is especially notable in those students who have lived abroad. The present study has five sections: the introduction; the theoretical frame; the methodological framework; the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the linguistic behaviors within the areas of the present study (Guanacaste and Central Valley) and finally, conclusions. En esta investigación se estudian las actitudes lingüísticas en una muestra de estudiantes guanacastecos de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (Sede Regional Chorotega y Sede Omar Dengo) hacia la variedad lingüística del español del Valle Central. Para la consecución de ese propósito, se emplea un cuestionario con una escala tipo Likert de cinco niveles, como instrumento para recolectar datos y analizarlos posteriormente mediante figuras, además de tres preguntas abiertas. Este enfoque de carácter cualitativo se utiliza como información valiosa que complementa los datos estadísticos. En cuanto a los resultados, la mayoría de los estudiantes entrevistados (migrados y no migrados) están conscientes de las diferencias lingüísticas entre los hablantes guanacastecos y vallecentraleños, también persisten prejuicios lingüísticos en el imaginario colectivo de algunos hablantes costarricenses; por último, en relación con la variedad lingüística en estudio, en el español del Valle Central se presentan procesos de acomodación o adaptación lingüística, inseguridad lingüística, cambio lingüístico (evidente con el fenómeno de la migración), actitudes de lealtad e identidad lingüísticas reforzadas con actitudes de mayor conciencia y aceptación de la diversidad lingüística y cultural de Costa Rica. Se puede concluir que en la percepción de los hablantes entrevistados sí se mantiene la división históricamente marcada entre la variedad lingüística del español de Guanacaste y español del Valle Central, sin embargo, el estudio de las actitudes lingüísticas demuestra un acercamiento nivelatorio y paulatino de ambas variedades lingüísticas, especialmente notorio en los estudiantes que han vivido la experiencia de la migración. Este artículo se estructura en cinco partes: antecedentes, marco teórico, metodología, resultados del análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de las actitudes lingüísticas de las zonas de estudio y, por último, conclusiones. A presente investigação estuda as atitudes linguísticas de uma amostra de estudantes de Guanacaste da Universidade Nacional da Costa Rica (Delegação Regional de Chorotega e Delegação de Omar Dengo) face à variedade linguística do espanhol do Vale Central. Para atingir este objetivo, utiliza-se um questionário com uma escala de cinco níveis do tipo Likert como instrumento de recolha de dados e posterior análise através de figuras, para além de três perguntas abertas. Esta abordagem qualitativa é utilizada como informação valiosa para complementar os dados estatísticos. Quanto aos resultados, a maioria dos estudantes entrevistados (migrantes e não migrantes) tem consciência das diferenças linguísticas entre os falantes de guanacasteco evallecentraleño; os preconceitos linguísticos também persistem no imaginário coletivo de alguns falantes costa-riquenhos; Finalmente, em relação à variedade linguística em estudo, no espanhol do Vale Central há processos de acomodação ouadaptação linguística, insegurança linguística, mudança linguística (evidente com o fenómeno da migração), atitudes de lealdade e identidade linguística reforçadas com atitudes de maior consciência e aceitação da diversidade linguística e cultural da Costa Rica. Conclui-se que, na perceção dos falantes entrevistados, se mantém a divisão historicamente marcada entre a variedade linguística do espanhol de Guanacaste e o espanhol do Vale Central; no entanto, o estudo das atitudes linguísticas mostra uma aproximação gradual e niveladora de ambas as variedades linguísticas, especialmente notória nos alunos que viveram a experiência da migração.
