Research questions being investigated are: What it means to be Italian for the studied population? Do they consider themselves Italian, or Costa Rican (or both)? Which are the Italian elements of identity? This analysis follows the guidelines on the ideologies of Teun van Dijk (2000), and the conceptualizations about Italianness of Ernesto Galli (1998). It is considered that behind each collective self representation (positive or negative), there is the need to establish bonds of belonging. El objetivo de este artículo es indagar la posibilidad de una construcción de la italianidad en la población ítalo-sanviteña de la primera a la tercera generación mediante las propias elaboraciones discursivas. Al respecto, nos preguntamos: ¿qué significa ser italiano para la población estudiada?, ¿se consideran italianos o costarricenses (o ambos)?, y ¿cuáles son los elementos identitarios italianos? Este análisis sigue los lineamientos sobre las ideologías de Teun van Dijk (2000) y sobre la italianidad de Ernesto Galli (1998). Consideramos que detrás de cada autorrepresentación colectiva (positiva o negativa) está la necesidad de establecer vínculos de pertenencia. El trabajo se contextualiza en la ciudad de San Vito, en la zona sur de Costa Rica.
