The article takes a methodological approach, which involved an in-depth analytical reading of secondary sources available in websites and sources in print of the main theoretical claims, guided by a qualitative approach and a descriptive type of research, which enabled a series of reflection, dialogue and discussion meetings, firstly among the authors. Subsequently, through a questionnaire or interviews, specialists were consulted on the challenges, opportunities and applications of the different approaches. The research allows to conclude that the evolution of theoretical contributions, from the foundations of Adam Smith’s economic theory to more recent paradigms such as the bioeconomy, evidences a considerable degree of advance in time, which translates into contributions as the instruments for the respective applications and actions overlapped in the development. Additionally, it is possible to indicate that there are important challenges and opportunities for generating and furthering knowledge, as well as practical applications of economic-environmental schemes that potentialize resilience as an essential factor in all human activities. El ambiente tiene un rol fundamental en la calidad de vida de todo el orbe; de ello surge el objetivo de este artículo: describir la evolución teórica de la vinculación entre economía y ambiente para la identificación de aplicaciones y acciones en el marco del desarrollo. El artículo tiene un enfoque metodológico, que conllevó una lectura analítica profunda de fuentes secundarias disponibles en sitios digitales y fuentes físicas de los principales postulados teóricos, con la guía de un enfoque cualitativo y un tipo descriptivo de investigación, lo que posibilitó una serie de espacios de reflexión, diálogo y discusión por parte de las autoras, en primera instancia. Posteriormente, mediante un cuestionario o entrevistas, se realizó la consulta a personas especialistas sobre los desafíos, oportunidades y aplicaciones de los diferentes enfoques. La investigación permite concluir que la evolución de las contribuciones teóricas, desde los cimientos de la teoría económica de Adam Smith hasta paradigmas más recientes como la bioeconomía, evidencia un considerable grado de avance en el tiempo, que se traduce en contribuciones como el instrumental para las respectivas aplicaciones y acciones que confluyan en el desarrollo. Junto con esto, es posible indicar que existen importantes retos y oportunidades para la generación y profundización de conocimiento, y aplicaciones prácticas de esquemas económico-ambientales que potencien la resiliencia como factor imprescindible de todas las actividades humanas.
