The study problem was defined based on the following question: what are the main characteristics of the innovation processes in the agricultural sector of Costa Rica? The information comes from indicators generated in different innovation surveys in the country, with emphasis on the last one that was carried out in 2019. These surveys are drawn up from a simple random sampling methodology, which was carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), based on the directory of establishments in the different sectors. One of the findings is that there are few companies in the sector with significant innovations, but in general, those that have promoted innovations achieve positive impacts in various aspects of performance. It is also concluded that although there are policies to promote innovation in the sector, the scope has been very limited, since a series of barriers persist limiting the processes to achieve innovation. Some of the barriers identified have to do with deficiencies in the financial sector, but others are related to limitations in the type of interactions with different actors in the system. En este artículo se analizan los procesos de innovación en el sector agropecuario, recurriendo a comparaciones con el sector manufacturero y al sector servicios, en temas relevantes. El problema de estudio se definió a partir de la siguiente pregunta: ¿qué características tienen los procesos de innovación en el sector agropecuario de Costa Rica? La información proviene de indicadores generados en distintas encuestas de innovación en el país, con énfasis en la última que se realizó en 2019. Esas encuestas se elaboran a partir de una metodología de muestreo simple al azar, el cual fue realizado por el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INEC) sobre la base del directorio de establecimientos en los distintos sectores. Entre los hallazgos sobresale que existen pocas empresas en el sector con innovaciones significativas pero que, en general, esas que han impulsado innovaciones logran impactos positivos en varios aspectos del desempeño. También se concluye que, aunque hay políticas para fomentar la innovación en el sector, los alcances han sido insuficientes, pues persiste una serie de barreras que limitan los procesos para lograr innovaciones. Algunas de las barreras identificadas tienen que ver con deficiencias del sector financiero, pero hay otras limitaciones en el tipo de interacción con distintos actores del sistema.
