In this sense, Citizenship Education has acquired importance in the pedagogical field since its objectives are to defend, promote, and practice democracy in school contexts. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to reflect on the implications of Law 20.911 for Initial Teacher Education in Chile. First, the purposes of Citizenship Education are addressed, then the curricular evolution at the local level is contextualized, to end with the results of research that have had positive effects on initial teacher education. It is concluded that teachers must have solid tools to address citizenship training in schools and that universities have the responsibility to update their curricula to strengthen pedagogical competencies in citizenship. El espacio educativo ha sido fundamental para promover conocimientos, habilidades y actitudes ciudadanas en los niños, las niñas y los jóvenes que se encuentran en etapa escolar. En este sentido, la Formación Ciudadana ha adquirido importancia en el ámbito pedagógico ya que tiene como objetivos defender, promover y practicar la democracia desde los contextos escolares. Por ello, este ensayo reflexiona sobre las implicancias de la Ley 20.911 en la Formación Inicial Docente en Chile. En primera instancia, se abordan los propósitos de la Formación Ciudadana, luego se contextualiza la evolución curricular en el nivel local, para finalizar con los resultados de investigaciones que han tenido efectos positivos en la Formación Inicial Docente. Se concluye, que el profesorado debe contar con herramientas sólidas para abordar la formación de ciudadanos en las escuelas y que las universidades tienen la responsabilidad de actualizar sus planes de estudios para fortalecer las competencias pedagógicas en ciudadanía.
