That is, a reflection related to the Catholic Church of the 20th century. It investigates where the roots are and the spirit that allowed it to maintain its influence, opposition and resistance to the entry of Protestantism. The main works consulted are: “The Costa Rican Church: between God and Caesar” by Miguel Picado published in 1988; and, “State and Catholic Church in Costa Rica 1850-1920: in the processes of control of geographical space and the creation of a Costa Rican model”, by José Sandí, published in 2012, plus unpublished publications from the 30s and 50s. From the theoretical, we turn to Pierre Bourdieu and his work on the religious field. It is concluded that the Catholic Church, faced with liberal laws, the social issue, the appearance of communism and Protestantism, knew how to accommodate itself to maintain its influence both politically, religiously and culturally, in such a way that, in the Constitution of the Second Republic (1949), continued to maintain the status of official religion. En este artículo, mediante un acercamiento socio histórico, se analiza el contexto religioso católico previo al auge pentecostal que se da desde los años 60 en Costa Rica. Es decir, una reflexión relacionada en torno a la Iglesia Católica del siglo XX. Se indaga dónde están las raíces y el talante que le permitió mantener su influencia, oposición y resistencia al ingreso del protestantismo. Las obras principales consultadas son: “La iglesia costarricense: entre Dios y el César” de Miguel Picado publicada en 1988; y, “Estado e iglesia católica en Costa Rica 1850-1920: en los procesos de control del espacio geográfico y la creación de un modelo costarricense”, de José Sandí, editada en 2012, más publicaciones inéditas de los años 30 y 50. Desde lo teórico, acudimos Pierre Bourdieu y su obra sobre el campo religioso. Se concluye que la Iglesia Católica, ante las leyes liberales, la cuestión social, la aparición del comunismo y el protestantismo, se supo acomodar para mantener su influencia tanto en lo político, religioso y cultural, de tal manera que, en la Constitución de la Segunda República (1949), continuó manteniendo el estatus de religión oficial.
